Name Austro means 'southern' and saurus means 'reptile' so the name Austrosaurus means southern reptile. What sort of dinosaur? Long necked dinosaurs like Austrosaurus were called sauropods. Some other dinosaurs that were sauropods were Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus. Where did Austrosaurus live? Scientists once thought that dinosaurs like Austrosaurus lived in swamps. They thought that the shallow water would help to take the weight off the dinosaur's legs. Now, many scientists think that these big dinosaurs lived in dry, firm areas. Perhaps they could even run well. How big was Austrosaurus? These dinosaurs were big ! They were about fifteen metres long. An adult was about four metres high at the shoulder and a little less at the hip. Like many sauropods, Austrosaurus had its front legs longer than its back legs. |
