There are many species belonging to the macropod or kangaroo family. The largest three species of kangaroo are the red kangaroo, the eastern grey kangaroo and the western grey kangaroo.

Populations of kangaroos vary greatly. In good seasons, numbers increase and in droughts the populations decrease. Other factors like hunting, disease and migration also affect kangaroos' numbers.
