This picture is actually of a tiger quoll. The chuditch looks very similar but it doesn't have spots on its tail.

The Chuditch


Chuditches were once common across more than 70% of the Australian mainland. Now, they are found only in the forests of south-west Australia.


A successful breeding program in the Perth Zoo has stopped the chuditch sliding towards extinction.


Chuditches are bred in the zoo and  released into the wild. For the chuditch to survive, the threats to the animal have to be dealt with.


The main threats are

* foxes - wildlife officers down baits that kill foxes but not native wildlife.


* chuditches being killed on roads.


* land being cleared . The chuditch needs bushland to survive.


*illegal trapping and poisoning.
