The common wombat (Vombatus ursinus) is a powerful animal. It uses its strong legs to dig burrows through soil. Fortunately, the female's pouch opens backwards so that it does not fill with sand in the burrow. If a dog or a fox chases a wombat into a burrow, it might not escape alive. The wombat is likely to use its 30 kg of muscle to crush the dog against the wall or roof of the burrow. Common wombats are found from southern Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, as well as Flinders Island in Bass Strait. |
