Mallee Fowl

Mallee fowl are about the size of a chook.

Many birds sit on their eggs to keep them warm.     Mallee fowl keep the eggs warm a different way. They build a huge mound of rotting leaves and soil. As the leaves rot, they make heat. The mallee fowl can poke its beak into the mound and tell if the mound is too hot or too cold. The usual number of eggs laid is between 10 and 30. The rotting leaves keep the eggs warm because the eggs are buried inside the mound.

The orange part of the map shows where mallee fowl can be found.

   My enemies

are goannas, foxes, dogs, cats, dingoes, pigs and hawks. Some of these animals are introduced. People also worry me because they

   clear land to build

       farms. Salt build

         up on farms is

             also bad for

                 mallee fowl.
