Possums

Possums are Australian marsupials. They are very     common in some areas. They live well in cities and suburbs. They are common in city parks, especially in    Melbourne. The possum in the photograph is drinking from a cup outside someone's house. Possums are found all over Australia.

Possums are cute looking animals. They have large, dark eyes to give them better vision at night. Their body size is a little larger than a cat. The tip of the tail is bald along one edge and this is gives them the ability to grasp branches with their tail. Their fur is short and thick. The colour of the fur ranges from black to grey to rusty red, depending on the area where they live.

Enemies of the possum are owls, quolls and dingoes. Pythons and large  goannas can also eat possums.

Once, possums were hunted for their fur.  They are still hunted in

Tasmania and New Zealand where they were introduced in 1840.
